William Serle (Hedison) is a man tormented by the sight of a group of people he refers to as 'the watchers' who mysteriously appear on the scene of any impending human disaster. His psychiatrist concludes that he is suffering from trauma, brought on by being one of the few survivors of a horrific train crash. Serle soon learns that the watchers are those who died on the train. Having confronted his fear Serle believes the apparitions are over and takes a vacation with his wife but when the watchers reappear William immediately suspects his wife's life is in danger. In trying to save her he is killed. The watchers observe for the last time as William's body is carried away... having finally claimed the soul of the man who should have died with them.
