A group of German POW's returning to devastated Berlin find employment by clearing the city of unexploded bombs. These men form a macabre pact - they will donate half their weekly wage into a common pool, to be divided at the end of three months by the survivors. The lives of these men are now not only at risk from hazards during the working day but, with such high stakes to play for, the unpredictable behaviour of their colleagues.
