Peter Carter arrives in town with his family to take up the post of headmaster of the local school. His nine-year-old daughter, Jean, complains of being approached by Clarence Olderberry, a pillar in the community and Carter presses charges of indecent assault. However the case is dropped after the defence council's brutal cross-examination of Jean and the overbearing influence of the Olderberry family. Whilst preparing to leave town Jean and a friend go missing in the woods and the longest day in the Carters' lives begins.
This courageous attempt to deal with the difficult subject of child abuse was well ahead of its time.
