Synopsis

Archaeologists discover the final resting place of a boy king, removing the remains to be exhibited in a museum. By disturbing the sarcophagus they unleash the forces of darkness. The Mummy has returned to discharge a violent retribution on the defilers as the curse that surrounds the tomb begins to come true. One by one the explorers are murdered until one of them discovers the ancient words that have the power to reduce the brutal killer to particles of dust.

By this stage, the gravel pit desert setting was looking too threadbare, but the gorgeous interior production design, photography and Michael Ripper make it worth watching.

Well-acted, reasonably well-written, unusually character-driven movie shows some style on the part of director John Gilling (PLAGUE OF THE ZOMBIES, THE REPTILE) in spite of cheap budget. An interesting-enough little movie if one can avoid laughing at the odd Mummy. 6/10 AVERAGE.

Apologies to Karloff1931 for disagreeing with you again - but I far prefer this to Curse of the Mummy's Tomb. I actually think that Michael Ripper has more to do than usual. there are some great moments in this and a lot of class Brit character actors really have some fun. I like the impassive, implacable aspect to the mummy - yes, the depth of the first film is missing but the idea that something so dead and so strong will just keep going until it's wasted you is a chilling one. My second fave Hammer mummy film.

for those who aren't aware of this, "the mummy's shroud" was the last horror film and also one of the last productions to be made at bray studios before hammer moved to elstree. they appeared to have finished with a whimper instead of a bang. this latest film in the mummy series has little commend it. andre morell is completely wasted and i'm not sure why he was placed first in the cast. after the opening 15 minutes or more, he quite rapidly fades into the background which is a shame as he was a gifted actor. it's also good to see michael ripper again but the same problem applies to another gifted talent as he too is underused. the low budget really shows in this one and i'm positive when i watch the film(which isn't that often) that i can spot the slight view of a microphone. shoddy production values indeed. the mummy character is a carbon copy of that in the previous film, that of a cold-blooded and one-dimensional killing machine. at least the likes of boris karloff and christopher lee brought a measure of depth and character when they played the same part. the same can't be said with this mummy. also, the violence is rather too gratuitous for my liking. the scenes where the mummy claims its victims, tend to be both unpleasant and un-necessary.
