Synopsis

The powers of good are pitted against the forces of evil as the Duc de Richelieu wrestles with the charming but deadly Satanist, Mocata, for the soul of his friend. Mocata has the knowledge and the power to summon the forces of darkness and, as the Duc de Richelieu and his friends remain within the protected pentacle, they are subjected to ever-increasing horror until thundering hooves herald the arrival of the Angel of Death.

This must be the best Hammer horror made to date. Simply a classic a top director and an awesome cast, British horror at its best!

Surely there is no reason Christopher Lee couldn't reprise the role of the Duc? I'm sure I've read an article recently where Christopher Lee stated he would play the role again...

This is probably one of the best horror films ever made. It retains the ability to frighten all these years later. I think it is the poise and gravitas the Christopher Lee brings to the character of de Richleau, but consider too the other actors around him. Charles Gray, the divine Nike Arrighi, Leon Greene (given that extra quality by Patrick Allen) and so many more. This is reportedly Christopher Lee's favourite Hammer film and there is no argument from me. There were many more Wheatley books with de Richleau and Rex; it is a pity more films weren't made. Maybe we could see them coming through now - it would make a revelatory TV series... I'm not a big fan of remakes but, who could play the Duc?

one of my favourite Hammer horror films of all time, "the devil rides out" is a fine example of film-making: a fine script by richard matheson, first rate direction from my favourite director terence fisher and excellent performances from christopher lee and charles gray help to make this film a true classic. that opening scene where a devil-like creature emerges from below the earth to menace christopher lee and leon greene, always gives me the chills!

One of the finest British horror/fantasy films of all time. Christopher Lee's turn as Duc de Richelieu was played to perfection. It's a shame he didn't play more heroic types. The film has superb pace and atmosphere and is a guilty pleasure of mine. If Hammer were to remake this, then Lee would be incredibly hard to beat. The role would require charisma and gravitas on an epic scale. Dennis Wheatley's Strange Conflict would make a great sequel.
