Synopsis
Called in to investigate the murder of one of the staff of an exclusive little gown-shop in Bond Street, "Cristophe et Cie", Detective Inspector Charlesworth soon discovers that a mistake has been made - the wrong girl has been murdered.
Ultra-efficient Miss Agnes Gregory, the boss's right-hand woman - disliked by all and hated by most, is still alive; but popular Magda Doon is dead.
The inspector's interrogation only deepens mystery. The poison crystals had been bought quite openly by two of the girls to clean a hat. During the rush in the shop they had disappeared. Cecil, the temperamental designer, admits to having taken some of them to frighten them all. Almond Blossom, an oriental mannequin, confesses to taking the rest to kill Miss Gregory, and then tries to take her own life. Even the charwoman has a guilty secret.
Finally, the inspector summons them all to a meeting in the shop, where he discloses that it was impossible for any of them to have killed Miss Doon with so little poison - unless someone had secretly bought some more crystals. The evidence of some wet paint on her shoes from the newly-painted entrance to a chemist's shop discloses that this was the hated Gregory herself, jealous of her rival's popularity, especially with their boss.
