The manager of a small provincial bank, a cold disciplinarian notorious for an inflexible, harsh regime, is visited this Christmas Eve by Mr. Hepburn to check the holiday security arrangements. A phone call from his wife reveals his family are prisoners of Hepburn's accomplices and Fordyce is forced to hand over the contents of the Bank's vaults. As he leaves Hepburn warns Fordyce against notifying the police if he wants to see his family again - alive. But a bank employee has already phoned for help and Fordyce must plea with him to delay the authorities. Christmas Eve will to be a very long day for Fordyce and, by its end, he will be a completely changed man.
